Remove the impeller?Fantastic! I was wondering why there was so much resistance when I turned the prop by hand.

It's been mentioned a couple of times, and seems reasonable - that you want the old gas engine "donor motor" to be a lot larger than the equivalent HP you want to get out of it.The reason is that the value of using an electric motor is that it has the torque to drive a much larger prop. Gas motors compensate for lack of torque by running at high RPM. So... You'd want a 10hp or 20hp lower unit with a correspondingly much larger prop (and gearing to go with it) to be able to handle the higher torque that your electric motor can generate.Otherwise, you could in theory use a 2hp gas engine, replace the head, etc. But you'd still want to use a bigger prop - and that would probably mean you'd need to take a grinder after some of the structure on the lower unit so that a larger prop would fit. :)Be sure to remember to also take out the impeller for the water pump. That will GREATLY reduce the friction on the drive shaft, and isn't needed for your electric motor.Good luck!John

I appreciate the suggestions regarding retrofitting an outboard with electric motor. I stumbled on a 0.4 hp permanent magnet motor in 24 volt. It's 1800 rpm. And only $120 from Surplus Center. I'm concerned it may not have the power needed in this power to weight ratio of a Newport 16. I'd like to find a 2hp outboard to install it in.
