Re: [Electric Boats] New Member introduction from the Caribbean

Welcome Doug.
For clarity's sake, this is the dinghy discussed in the 'electric planing dinghy' thread.

Miles , thanks for the welcome.   to be as brief as possible my family and I have lived on a boat since 1967 in the Caribbean....we took our ship around the world for ten years of that period when the youngsters were growing up. they are gone and its just my wife and I on this old steel 150 ton Dutch coaster ..... Ive been trying to beat the system since 1967 living the way we do and the latest gasoline increase $1.32 litre has really convinced me of the correct course. . Ive always built the tenders for our ship and the last one out of 3/8" corecell foam , my own design....it is 16 ft and very light and very tippy too but it goes like shit off a shovel with a 15 yamaha on the back...In fact we have to ballast it (60lbs) to keep everyone from falling out.    It has two wide lifters and a flat section down the center of the keel aft which kicks it up on a plane very easily and  quickly...the length helps too .... Robbie Linda a friend for years has  just finished his electric catamaran/sail assisted electric tender which got me thinking.  We are involved together now in the electrifying of my tender. Doing away with the 60 lbs of ballast  plus a 35 lb gas tank would get us a long way toward 165 lbs of lithium 48v in a center console...it would stabilize the boat incredibly to start with and if we can get close to the revs it would  hardly slow it down to get it up on the plane.

Ive always run diesel generators for power 8kw , 3 cylinder charging a . 24v dc system mainly because we would go to Venezuela every 3 or 4 years and pick up 15,000 litres of  fuel for .10 cents a litre but times have changed down there with banditos everywhere...its simply not safe and I am not as tough as I used to be .  Four years ago we switched to solar and wind power and have gone from 5 to 7  hours a day diesel generator time  to about 11/2 hours every three days...usually just for the washing machine. !

Robbie and I shall share our experiences with the group. At the moment it seems that the extra rpm have got to come from pitch and prop diameter..... the motor selection for the moment is the PMACDS 12 KW - 30 KW PK 5000 RPM PK   WITH 72  volts
