Re: [Electric Boats] Outboard to Inboard

Thanks Dan.

It looks like the electricboats site in the UK was referencing Sillette saildrives. It also appears that they have units that range from 2.8kW (direct drive) to 4.8 to 8kW (2:1 reduction) depending on the motor chosen by the installer. I think that electric saildrives are simpler than ICE versions because electric motors eliminate the vibration concerns related to mounting engines like that.

An electric pod mounted permanently under the waterline would be theoretically more efficient, but protecting the motor from water intrusion 24 hours a day can be problematic. I think that the Re-E-power pods suffered from problems with their seals.

Does anyone here know if Sillette has a US distributor? It seems like an effective solution for some conversions.

Fair winds,
Eric

PS: Due to the cost of Torqeedo products, I would be hesitant to take mine apart for components in a DIY engineering experiment. But maybe that's just me... ;)

All you would need is a 1" hole in the bottom to attach the unit. Plus if you made some kind of attachment you could still turn the motor head for direction (Just a small knob).
