[Electric Boats] Re: Hi ya - battery estimates

Between Nigel Caulder, and the folks who wrote "Wiring for 12 Volts with Ample Power", and "Living on 12 Volts with Ample Power" I do ok concept wise. I'll have to get used to thinking in watts instead of AH. I just watched my Dad convert a Volkswagen rabbit pickup to electric (w/o a kit). He bought a test battery bank for cheap during the trouble shooting phase, I suspect he'll end up with the lithium batteries once he's ready to fork over the $$$. Thats where I got the idea to start with FLA, and then switch them out.

Ok, on to business. Looking at all those wonderful numbers you came up with the thing that strikes me is that weight is an issue. I don't remember how much 6 volt FLA batts weighs, but its close to 70 lbs. So I'd like (and I understand that I loose out on range here) to keep the total package weight under 600lbs. I suspect that changes things quite I bit. I don't have much experience with AGMs, I usually went for gels in the systems I built up.

So, based on the info you kindly provided I should perhaps think about something more like this... 48 volt motor, max speed (flat water) ~6 knots, cruise@ 4, duration @ cruise 2.5 hrs, range @ cruise ~10nm, which brings my total battery wattage required down to 12,750 (figuring AGMs with a 70% DOD)? Huh... that looks like a group of 8 golf cart sized AGMs could run for about 3 hours, I think.

Am I headed the right direction?
