Re: [Electric Boats] Simple starter project...

I do have a BMS that does active balancing. And I would recommend a BMS that does active balancing. Especially if you want an install it and forget it battery. But if you do go with a BMS that only monitors the battery, if as you say you keep the cell between 2.5 and 3.5, on a well balanced battery pack, then I doubt you would have to rebalance very often, maybe never.  But you might, with either top or bottom balancing both are a bit time consuming. By not having a BMS that balances, you are by default the "active balancer"

I will say I don't recommend the type of LiFePo BMS that have a little circuit board attached to each cell. The chance of them short circuiting is simply to great.

If I was buying a BMS today, I would probable go with the Orion BMS.

But that would not make a ton of financial sense for the original poster as he was only talking about a $400 dollar 12v 100ah pack.  Which is why I wanted to give good advise for his personal situation.

To be more general, if your battery pack cost more then $2000 bucks I would highly recommend the peace of mind an active balancing BMS would give you. Under that cost, a good BMS might not be worth the extra cost. But you will need to preform a bit of semi-yearly maintenance instead.

James (not Lamden),
are you proposing that a BMS is not necessary for a Lithium pack. I have heard of this being done. Even one distributor of CALB cells has a white paper discussing this. Essentially they bottom balance the cells individually before hooking them in series and then just never charge them beyond 3.5 VPC, or let them go below, I think 2.5 VPC. Seems like, with periodic cell monitoring like you mentioned and a fully configurable, high quality charge that going BMS less is possible. Thoughts anyone?
