[Electric Boats] Re: New Member

You realize, of course, that 1HP = 746w, right? So basically, 60HP = 44.76kw. The typical small boat electric motor is rated at 5kw and is usually operated at about 2kw. Even so, the battery bank sized for extended operation is quite large and heavy, if you use FLA deep cycle batteries. If you use LiFeP04 then it is considerably lighter but way more expensive. Your power requirements are not even close to realistic. There is only just so much room on a 23' boat. I don't think you have room for a sufficiently large bank even if you fill it completely up with batteries. Reduce your speed requirement to 3kts and things are much more realistic. At that speed you can cover the boat with a solar canopy and greatly extend the range of a 10kw/hr or so bank. Possibly during the middle part of the day, not draw from the bank at all. But the panels and charge controllers will be expensive, too.

For your first foray into electric boats, my suggestion is to start with a sailboat that has a non working and irreparable engine; a boat that is not worth upgrading with a new engine. If you really do your homework you can repower for under $3k. Then, when you need power for docking or other maneuvering, you got it. When you are becalmed and in a hurry to get to the dock, you can motor home if the distance is not too great. You will have power on demand instead of hoping a diesel will start, waiting for it to warm up, listening to it roaring and clanking, smell the fuel and exhaust, etc. You will NOT have any reasonable range at anything close to hull speed, but with a sailboat it isn't needed. This is your best creative outlet and learning platform for electric propulsion, not a planing hull motorboat that requires a 60hp outboard.
