The issue with any form of power derived from the environment while on a boat depends, naturally, on the environment. If you're at anchor on a dull and cloudy day with lots of wind then a wind generator is great to have; if you're in the tropics on a windless day then solar is what you want, and if you're skimming along in the trade winds at night then a water powered one is the only option.
Eric indicates that an installed 350 W of PV would be a nice to have, and it certainly wd be, in the right geography and on the right boat, but with my boat I'd have to tow a raft around to install that much PV, and even then there's not enough reliable sunlight where I live (PNW). Have admit, though, this last month was pretty good. And the nice thing about solar is no moving parts. Things that spin and whir and whiz always have an associated degree of hazard, and are meanwhile wearing something out. And you have to bear in mind that an in-water generator will lower your speed, of course. Nevertheless it is a complement to the other forms of generation.
