Agreed, "motor from the transom of any design doesn't appeal at all".
But this

fails!
The motor is bolted to the hull, and the motor moment tends to turn then
tiller! The induced force to the tiller arm must be compensated by a
steering contra force in tiller. Instead, the motor should better be
bolted to the tiller operated tubing down (as it is made in outboard
type drives).

I built and tested an el-motor modified outboard drive, but this design
was a disappointment. Later a tiller-rotated "sail drive" type el-drive
using an inboard el-motor, and an outboard rig gearbox under the keel
was built.
