Re: [Electric Boats] Thunderstorms

Not to rain on parade but have been hit many times sailing and also at anchor. Always used a well grounded cone of protection. One time had it enter thru a running light and fry everything with the ground wiring carrying so went after with a power w\switch on plus and on negative

A lineman told me that although a lightning bolt can be well over a million volts, but by the time it is conducted to the meter on the side of your house it is no more than 6,000 volts due to leakage and grounding. That means that surge protectors only have to deal with 6,000 volts. That's still plenty to fry just about any circuitry. Microcircuitry is being used on all sorts of household devices including HVAC units and appliances, some of which cannot be unplugged. What I did was had the electric company install a whole-house surge protector. It fits between the meter and the meter base. Now everything is protected and I don't have to rush upstairs in the middle of the night to turn off the computers. Back on topic, the good news is that 70% of all lightning is over land in the tropics. It is rare at sea. ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
