[Electric Boats] Re: Backups

With a 48 volt setup, you want all the batteries to be of the same type and state of charge. So, you would need 4 extra batteries to have a useful backup.

However, running on full throttle draws many many times the current of going slow. Discharged batteries can still provide a small amount of current. So again, if you run out, shut everything off, turn it back on, and then trying moving at a very slow speed. You might be surprised how far you can go. Think of it as "limp home" mode. If you try going faster, the controller will just shut it down again.

So, even if I'd had a generator along to recharge the batteries, we'd either be anchoring for a bit or hoping the wind was blowing at that point to keep us moving.

You wouldn't want to mix batteries of different chemistries and different states of charge. If however, you have a 12 Volt motor with the 4 AGMs in parallel, you might be able to do something.
