Hi to All you enthusiasts out there.
I am a new member and the purpose of this membership is to exchange ideas about the design of an electric boat from Scratch.
I am located in Darwin Australia and I currently own a 42 ft. Lagoon Cat. which I am re-building ready to sail around the world again.
I am researching propulsion systems to replace the two 30hp diesels that power it.
The current choice of engine is a AC50 three phase low voltage induction motor with a Curtis 1238R controller.
The main issues I have relate to programming the controller to respond correctly in re-gen mode when sailing and using the fixed prop to charge the batteries, by rotation of the AC50 directly back to the battery set.
I am not familiar with this controller or its available control functions. Does anybody have any experience with resolving this problem.
And are their any better types of propulsion systems I should consider.
I Am installing 1.5 KW solar panels, custom built into the hard top and two 600 W air-ex wind generators.
Internally my aux Diesel15hp which powers the air conditioning will be a battery charger as well. Since I do not use the air con. I intend to install another AC50 driven by a 17hp diesel as the direct recharge system for long range cruising. This motor will be clutch connected to my water maker.
Over to you.
Regards Colin Freeman
