Solar panels can be coupled series or parallel. If you buy smaller
power panels and hook them in series to obtain your 144v +charging
voltage, you can avoid any stepping up of voltage from the panels.
Because the output is in order with square surface area, you should be
able to keep with the same size by accepting a lower amperage output. I
know, the output is in watts. it is all in the configuration of the
panels. The panels I am working with can handle being set-up for 1000v.
Another thing you may look into is feeding capacitors to store some of
your juice.
Another train of thought is to use the DC to DC converter built into a
common inverter to step up to roughly 156v. All you would have to do is
tap into the capacitor bus in the inverter. I like the serial connected
panel idea best to avoid losses.
