[Electric Boats] prop

i'm converting a sailboat and finding these discussions are often over my head although very interesting. i'm planning on using a simple trolling motor or outboard electric. boat will weigh about 1500lbs fully loaded with waterline width approx 6'.

on a smaller boat, i've been using a 30lb thrust trolling motor with an old minn kota maximizer. i discovered that direct power trolling motors use resistors to burn off extra power for all speeds below top speed. that seems wasteful so i found this old maximizer that is essentially an external mosfet unit. i set the motor at top speed and have variable control with the maximizer. drawback is i have to turn the control on the motor handle to find reverse. can i just reverse the polls at the battery to reverse the motor? will this damage the maximizer?

most trolling motors have the mosfet down in the motor head itself. this is good because it is underwater and keeping cool but bad in that mosfets are often the weak link in the trolling motor and, when they break, the motor doesn't work. by using the maximizer, i can still hook the motor up directly if the unit breaks. also it seems the straight power trolling motors are more dependable and cheaper.

one can buy pulse width modulators with higher amp draw. i'm thinking of a 24v-36v straight power trolling motor [or two] set at high power with the external pwm for adjustment. haven't decided on size yet.

as far as prop. i understand slower is better but motor needs to run at high rpm. is this true using the pwm? how does the trolling motor prop work with a 1500lb boat? the thought of a reduction box bothers me because it will lose precious battery power. i've thought of trying wide diameter, skinny airplane props. it's confusing to find the proper balance and, like i wrote, you guys are often over my head.

thx for any advice.
