Sorry for a delayed reply, but I'm having the same difficulty in the UK.
Trolling through the EBA list of outboard suppliers I came across an ad for the Dutch "Combi" motor (http://www.combi-outboard.nl/) which seemed to have a more sensible prop, but then discovered that the English distributor had given up on them and was recommending an Austrian manufacturer called Aquamot (http://www.aquamot.at/marine/elektrische-bootsantriebe/motoren/aussenbordantrieb.html). Both of these have more powerful motors.
But their 2kW motor costs ~£2,500 which puts them well up with the Torqeedo models. I'm rather put off Torqeedo by the expensive features like Li-ion batteries and inbuilt GPS, neither of which I need.
I've tried a £139 trolling motor and they aren't worth the money for my purposes - which is driving a small river boat rather than fishing. So I'm prepared to spend 10x that but am not sure about 20x at the moment.

Neil,
There are a couple of "electric outboards" on the commercial market. My experience so far has been with the Torqeedo brand. I tried a Traxxis 80# trolling motor and a compared that to the Torqeedo 2.0 outboard. Both run on 24V. However, the Torqeedo gave me MUCH better speed - primarily due to the prop. The Torqeedo is also better suited for running at high speed for long runs (up to an hour or so) - though be aware that pulling 1500W from a bank of batteries for an hour will challenge you to find a battery bank that can keep up with that!!
Hope this helps!John

Subject: [Electric Boats] Frustrated in UK
Hi All.This is my first post on your forum...I have completed 3 x electric boat conversions... 2 of which were cut down 'trolling motors' and 1 x with a 10kw 48 volt direct drive.Because of the lack of experience and knowledge in the UK, i ended up buying from the US. Evdrives.comThey were really helpful and delivered the whole kit.My general frustration is that there seems to be a large gap, between 55lb/86lb trolling motors and the next step, which is 5kw perms. Also, prices for the same kit varies enormously.I think most people in this group are from the US, where you have lots more experience and knowledge than us in the UK... We still see electric propulsion is a 'black art', but clearly we have been installing electric motors in remote control boats for ever, and the Victorians were doing it in the late 1800's.So, I'm looking advice as to where a 'full range' of motors, controls, etc can be purchased, as my current project is for a 12ft launch.. Which i have put a 86lb 24v on, but its just not very satisfactory, and a 1500w would be so much better on a direct prop shaft.Thank you...Neil
