Hi Jam,
I also own an Alden, its a 1960 30' Priscilla. The old Atomic finally went away after faithfully powering my boat for almost 40 years. Now however after reading all the information on this group and not to mention being passed by all sorts of Tesla's, Chevy Volts, and numerous hybrids on my way to work have decided that Electric is the way to go. I am a weekend sailor and only use the motor to clear the marina and the train bridge. Our currents here on the East coast manage only a 3 or so knot run at full ebb or flood, so something that can help push when the wind is light is all I really need.
Have you decided on a motor yet? I am actually thinking of going with Thunderstruck. I tend to be pretty industrious, but having the helping hand of some experts makes the prospect of conversion seem less daunting.
I don't really have the cash to buy lithium, so I am thinking of 2 AGM banks at 48V....

I was wondering if you can fill me in with respect to what is the current state of affairs for an electric propulsion for my vintage sailboat. I have a wooden 36 ft 1935 John Alden with full keel. My old volvo 3B2 is in need of a change soon. I did the calculations a while back with a repower company and it turned out that I needed about 35hp to achieve the hull speed of 7 knots.
