RE: [Electric Boats] Re: Helm Instrumentation Project [2 Attachments]

I’m there with Roger, Electrical not as much of a problem as with Electronics and Programming.

What I have is a bank of 12 -12V batteries giving me a 144V system. Can you imagine the size of Mike’s “box” if I had to mount 12 gauges (1 for each battery) and a master Voltage gauge and since I have 2 motors also 2 Amp draw meters? I run the PakTtrakr and 2 individual meters for the Amp draw since this also shows me the Regen condition while sailing. I don’t see any reason to do away with the PakTrakr since it gives me overall state of charge for the 12 batteries, individual state of charge of each battery, and temperatures. It does this both in numbers and a bar graph. Disadvantages are yes the current draw on a single battery and the small display. Back to the Advantages, it does have a cable to output the data using an Android tablet. Problem is the software to run it doesn’t seem to work from a 3rd party developer and it’s set up for a car not a boat. The display can be moved anywhere you want it and set up on a stand. You can see it across the room!

I would propose:

The PakTrakr is the way to go to get the signal.

Install a switch at the Helm to kill all power to the PakTrakr when not in use.

Find a Boat Guy to work on the Software to run it using Bluetooth to Android

The advantage to this is it can be setup to run any battery configuration from 12V to whatever.

The display can be what ever size you want, portable, and updated.

Mike, I'm from the generation where electrical meters had needles and return springs and measured the currents with shunts. So to me, an LED readout is amazingly modern....almost scarily so.

But if I understand what mkriley48 (mike) is saying, the LED readouts are themselves dated and a more modern system would use a single data display screen with all the battery/motor info transmitted wirelessly - and no reason it couldn't include gps, chart, depth, and maybe this email as well.

Is that what is being proposed?

I wonder if anyone can put such a system together in as much detail as Capt. Mike did for his LED system?

   Roger L. - with the electric canoe.....  1hp & 10 amp*hrs = all afternoon enjoyment.
