[Electric Boats] Re: golf cart Motors for sailboat power transmission wear & rpm

Hi,
In industrial places, they have tachs that are hand held, and like a
dial with a shaft coming out of the side, and a rubber wheel on the end.
This gives you the surface feet per minute, then you work out RPM by
knowing the circumference of the shaft. They are used on lathes to
determine cutting speed.
Or, something like this:

If you have a deep pocket.

I don't believe that there are any practical differences between forward
and reverse. Spiral cut gears are made so that there is constant contact
of at least one tooth, thus decreasing noise that you get with straight
cut gears. If there is any difference, it would be in the thrust
direction, but I can't get my head around it right now without looking
at a gear set, but I am fairly sure that the thrust on a pinion would
always be away from the axis of the crownwheel. Gear teeth in general
are, I believe, cut with an equal-sided cross section, so the spiral
(and resulting thrust direction) would be the main differences to
consider. All this is from memory/off the top of my head, so check it.

I only just picked up on this thread, but if you are using a car
differential, you might be able to close up the clearances between the
gears, and use a thinner oil, as the loads are probably way less than on
a road vehicle.

Good Luck,

John

Is there any difference between forward and reverse in the way the
differential is cut
If forward and reverse get exchanged would it make any difference in how
long the gears are going to last before they wear out?

Have 48 v lithiam battery system with a 11 hp golf cart motor.
People talk about running the motor hot for short distances.
How is that done?

WOW WOWWOW Propeller turned for first time this PM
real thrill = it works
How do I check the rpm?
could I use an aftemarket cruise contol to check my rpm?

strobe or timing light on drive shaft?

all suggestions welcome
