Thanks to all of you for the thoughtful answers. I am learning a lot and *think* I understand the concepts you are putting forth.
It seems the greatest drawback is again batteries... If you lower the voltage and attempt to achieve the same power then the current load becomes too great for older (and possibly state-of-the-art) battery technology to sustain.
I guess that I need to see a set of torque curves at different voltages. It still seems a little counter-intuitive to run the motor twice as fast and then reduce the speed with more weight and moving parts. That may be more a function of the motor design than the voltage
