Re: [Electric Boats] Re: EPA commuication regarding 15% Ethanol use

Please cite sources for your claim.  According to this article from the Union of concerned scientists, "blog.ucsusa.org/rachael-nealer/gasoline-vs-electric-global-warming-emissions-953" your information is woefully out of date or else you are a pawn of the oil companies.

I like electric too.  I even have several.  So, I know this is going to come as a surprise to you and open a really big can of worms, but, ... Did you know that with our technology, AND taking into account all the manufacturing processes required, the "electric carbon and pollution foot print" is conservatively between 4 and 7 times more dirty and polluting than the basic use of fossil fuels?  There have been several studies by independent labs to prove it.   I have read one that claimed only 3 times more polluting, and one from a socialist think-tank that claimed 12 times, but I think that most of them were in the 4-7 range.  Take it for what its worth, everything has its place and in moderation.Enjoy your boat while you have it.  Have fun and don't take anything too seriously.  Cheers,

"Currently, isobutanol comes from fossil fuels."
From this article: https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/can-isobutanol-replace-ethanol

We need to move to 100% electric propulsion now, not in the future. Ethanol or isobutanol... as my Hawaiian friends say "No Matter"..

We all will have to make some major changes in what we think is normal.
Is this normal, filling a tank with 265 gallons of highly processed fossil fuels taken from the other side of the world, to be burned at 20% efficiency, to move a large cabin cruiser, not very far?
Not attacking you personally, we all are guilty of burning fossil fuels, and we all need to change. But we do all need to hold ourselves accountable to how we personally are effecting the environment.

Maybe it's time to retire some of these old dinosaur boats that can not be converted to electric? Or just use them as house boats.

Gas/Diesel should be so expensive that boats that get gallons/mile, rather then miles/gallon should go extinct. I hope that a gallon of gas goes to $10/gallon, and then we will see a big change in the world. I say tax the gas, and use that money to invest in renewable energy.

We as humans have the capability to fix this issue, we just need some motivation. I look forward to my son saying, "I can't believe you used to just burn fossil fuels, and everyone just breathed in the exhaust".

Stepping down from my soap box  : )

This is what I found on Wilipedia:

Biosynthesis of Isobutanol

Higher-chain
alcohols have energy densities close to gasoline, are not as volatile
or corrosive as ethanol, and do not readily absorb water. Furthermore,
branched-chain alcohols, such as isobutanol, have higher-octane numbers,
resulting in less knocking in engines. Although produced naturally
during the fermentation of carbohydrates and may also be a byproduct of
the decay process of organic matter, Isobutanol or C5 alcohols have
never been produced from a renewable source with yields high enough to
make them viable as a gasoline substitute before the 2008.

The small motor manufacturing organizations have been asking for this as a substitute for Ethanol for several years.  The EPA and certain political elected office holders seem to be motivated by the size of the donations rather than science, economics, of free market.

Strange as it sounds the EPA has impacted the "hybrid" market in the US for diesel electric boat by several hurdles that are not present in the EU and likely will prevent growth in the US larger boat market.
