Just launched my electric kayak today. It's powered by a 250w, 24v scooter motor (like for a Razor scooter) and a couple 12v 18ah AGM batteries in parallel. The motor is mounted inside the kayak with a 3/8" shaft going straight out through the back of the kayak. Currently it has a cut-down model airplane prop for a propeller. No speed control yet (on order) So far it works well and goes faster than I can paddle, even on 12v. I'm not sure I even want to try 24v.
Might be a viable setup for a canoe, too. Will take pix soon if interested.
