I have been lurking here for a very long time.
The hydraulic suggestion is a very good one.
I built a 16 X 50 foot steel hulled vessel and designed it so it could freeze in. BUT I needed the drive to be able to be lifted out of the water.
I built a steel frame that resembles an outboard
I mounted a hydraulic motor vertically, connected it with a shaft to a 16 inch four blade prop with a corner drive.
Installed two little 12 volt solenoids for reverse and forward.
Works like a dream

Just a crazy thought...   I think I've heard of people running paddlewheels off hydraulic motors.  You'd use electric power to run the hydraulic pumps to make the motors spin - so you'd still stay green.  :)   Hydraulic motors go really slow, so lend themselves to paddlewheels, and you would use valves (solenoid driven?) to reverse direction.

so you have paddle wheels on each side?
do you use a pulley from the winch motors to the paddle wheels?
Have you considered treadmill motors?
Most are 90 V DC.
if you don't need a full 3hp and speed, they can be ran off 48V.
You can usually pickup treadmills for free.
The motors are usually fine, the other parts of the treadmill die first.

Can you provide a link to a picture of your paddle wheels?

I have been thinking of making some for my hobbie cat conversion

Okay, so three years ago when we build Floating
Empire (www.thefloatingempire.com if anyone's
interested), it was a sternwheeler powered by a winch motor
running 12V.  It met with, shall we say, limited success
(though we still live aboard. . ..it seems everything worked
but the drive).  Now we're anticipating building a new
boat and I'm thinking of using brushed Ecycle hub motors
to drive sidewheels.  Would love to have people's
input.

Brushed BTW because
they're easier to reverse.

Any suggestions?
