Re: [Electric Boats] Hello group

Val,

The good news is that there are several documented Catalina 30 conversions out there.  You should probably see if you can track them down and try to talk to them personally.   If you've already got the old atomic 4 pulled, you're doing well.

But you probably need to understand a couple of things:

1)  By the time you get done with everything, an electric installation will cost you more than getting a gas or diesel replacement.

2)  Lithium batteries would be a better way to go, but will be part of the expensive side of the equation.

3)  Charging batteries is non-trivial.   I've been trying to use cheap ($25) trickle chargers, and it just doesn't work.  Be prepared to spend a serious chunk of $$ on chargers.

Please be sure to document what you do, and your findings.  It'll be nice to have yet another C-30's information!

Subject: [Electric Boats] Hello group

My boat is an old 1976 Catalina 30 (tall) and this past weekend we just pulled out the Atomic 4 engine. Over the winter I am planning to work on re-powering it with an electric motor. The boat is used for day sailing in the bay and short trips along the NY/NJ shore.

Information is available online about motors but battery info seems vague at least to me since I know next to nothing about battery types and their advantages. Does anyone know of any formula that would allow to calculate all the variables to achieve say 2 hours of propulsion and have a reserve?
