Re: [Electric Boats] Solarhouseboat

Bud,

Checked out your blog, nice work! I always thought one of those houseboats would make a good solar boat project.

Heads up on the window a/c, you'll need the generator and it will most likely need to be at least 2kW. I have a similar setup on the Arc with a 48V, 3500W inverter on 8-6V Trojan T-125s and they barely get my 11 cu.ft. refrigerator thru the night along with lights and home electronics. The a/c runs the battery down in a few hours then it's time to fire up the EU2000 if you want climate control when the sun isn't shining. We tried kicking a 5000btu unit with an EU1000 once and it didn't run.

I am adding more batteries and building a water to air micro a/c unit out of an old dehumidifier just for our main stateroom so we can sleep at night in the summer, hopefully, without running the genset. We'll see.

Good luck and nice work.

Carter

Subject: [Electric Boats] Solarhouseboat

Solarhouseboat is a 34' Trojan Houseboat powered by a 24 volt DC motor. It has a 115 Johnson outboard for a rudder, and sometimes it is used to back up the boat. It is 115 volts inside for creature comforts. The boat has a large battery bank, and a 3500 watt pure sine wave inverter to run off the grid. Solarhouseboat is preparing the travel the Great Loop beginning in May 2013.
