Re: [Electric Boats] New member

An option you might consider is the 10HP Torqeedo.

IF you only need the motor to get you in and out of the marina, don't have a LOT of big waves to fight, etc...
I set one up on my Catalina 30 to try it out.  It has plenty of power to push the boat forward, even into a fairly stiff breeze.
The only problem I have is that with all the windage, the 10HP outboard isn't sufficient to BACK the boat into a strong wind.   I also noticed this using a 10HP gas outboard on a previous Catalina 27 - so I won't make any promises for your 26 (which type of boat is it???).

There are a couple of really nice things about an outboard.  Primarily - installation is amazingly simple.  Drill 4 holes (ABOVE the waterline), mount an outboard bracket, find a place for the batteries, and you're pretty much done.  The other REALLY NICE thing about the outboard is that you git RID of several holes in the bottom of your boat!!!    The Torqeedo has the electric motor mounted in the pod below the water - so cooling is automatically covered for you.

The other outboard option is the Parsun - though might be harder to get in 10HP, and the weight is substantial.  HOWEVER - the Parsun is advertised to be available with electric tilt, which would be really handy!

Good luck!
John

Hi,

I have a 26ft sailboat that requires the inboard motor to be replaced. I am now considering the viability of going electric. The previous motor was a 10hp volvo diesel.
