This thread has been a great example of how thoughtful and civilized folks can have a conversation on some touchy topics without the "traditional" mud-slinging so common on the forums. Kudos to all.
James, have you collected any drag data on the boat before and after the "duck tail" was added? I too have been wondering about the feasibility of recycling old power cruisers and what what it would take to improve efficiency at displacement speeds. There are thousands of them out there across the US and many can be had for next to nothing.
