[Electric Boats] Electric motor in Quartet Tonner Yacht in Australia

Hi, I've been a lurker on this forum for years as I designed and built my electric motor to replace my stinky old 7HP Volvo inboard.

I've used a Golden motor 5KW motor through a Hurth gearbox for reduction and thrust with a 12"x 12" folding propeller in a 25 foot long Quarter Tonner sailboat with fixed keel and weight around 1,900kg (including motor and batteries.

Only using a 48V AGM 120Ah battery system as will be mainly for motoring in and out of marina pen, then sailing on salt water lakes system here in South Eastern Australia.

I'm a wheelchair user (used to compete in disabled solo sailing State, National and Worlds comps) but with age decided to build a bigger boat to sail with friends and family.

Can't say my motor design is as good as it could have been but will know more once it is in water - prop size and type is merely an educated guess and Hurth yacht gear-box that I found (only after building set-up) can only be driven in one direction, so need to use gearbox Fwd/Rev (bummer) instead of having a dual ratio box with electric Fwd/Rev (should have built toothed belt drive). All electrics are in motor space with ropes coming up pole to hydraulic steering so should be well protected from elements downstairs. Runs fine on hardstand but goes into water this week so strengths and weaknesses will be revealed then.

Nice reading about your projects and have learnt a lot from this forum.

Cheers from Downunder, Colin
