Thanks for the input Arby.  I understand from what you have said that the alternator will not spike if it is attached directly to the battery bank?  What happens if the battery bank is full? (ie. no draw) No voltage regulator necessary?  I intended to use Lithiums for the battery bank and 48V to 12V  step down for the house load.
