[Electric Boats] Golf cart motor speed reduction for Chris Craft Holiday?

 

I am considering fitting an engine-less Chris Craft Holiday 18 utility lake boat with electric propulsion. It's about 18 feet long and 7 feet wide weighing (I guess) 1,000 pounds. How do I reduce the speed of a golf cart motor to the propeller shaft speed?

I think 36-volt golf cart motors run 2000-4000 rpm under load. If the prop has a 12-inch pitch then it rotates 5280 times to move the boat one mile (ignoring slip). At 5 mph this would be 26,400 revolutions per hour or 440 rpm.

Someone on this group suggest 1 kw per ton of displacement, so that would suggest a 1 hp (756 watt) motor would suffice. Is a 3-4 hp golf cart motor too large, or about right for continuous 1 hp operation?

Do "high torque" motors run as slowly as 440 rpm and deliver 1 hp?

What about a stepper motor?
