Re: [Electric Boats] Good batteries for electric boat bank?

Be aware UPS is not deep cycle. They are designed to hold charge then be partially cycled occasionally. Repeated deep cycle discharge will rapidly reduce capacity.

Greetings Jason,

looks like they are similar but slightly shorter (less than a 1/2") than the AGMs I am using.  discharge rate is depicted different, and for sure the internals are for flooded vs AGM.  Note shelf life ( presumed uncharged/unused) is 24 months.  I note elsewhere in their data, that these large format batteries are built for a 12-14 year work life.  Their flooded batteries can only be used in the upright position with something like 15° of tilt max, in and axis.  At that point, If they will fit, and I guess that if the price is right, I personally would go for it.  Free is almost never bad...

A friend's company is changing out a bunch of large ups batteries and I have access to basically whatever I can use of the old ones. They are Northstar NSB-12-730RT Pure lead batteries that have been in an industrial online UPS for about a year. Online UPSes are dual conversion, where grid power charges the batteries and an inverter generates AC from the batteries. It is not standby mode. This means the batteries have been in constant use, albeit not heavily discharged, for the past year. These are 62kg a piece and hold about 190ah.

I have seen Northstar AGM batteries mentioned favourably on this list before, but not this specific model. What are your thoughts / opinions?
