[Electric Boats] Re: 79 Hunter Electric Conversion

 

That looks like a ME1117 motor, similar to the ME0907. For a 7000 lb boat that will be just adequate in reasonable conditions. I think you might like a ME0913 better, though... twice the power rating. Better heat disapation. Bigger, tougher motor. The kit appears to have cable sized a bit smaller than my preference. I use 2/0 cable for DC supply and phase cables. Your installation might require longer wire runs, and so you couldnt use the prefab cables anyway. The controller looks like a Sevcon, and it is a good brand, except it is not AFAIK user configurable without a special piece of equipment. The Kelly controllers are user configurable using only a serial/USB adapter and cable, though unfortunately Kelly refuses to port the software to Linux so you are stuck with having a WinDOHs computer onboard for making changes. Still, for me that makes the Kelly line of controllers preferable. Maybe someone with experience programming Sevcon controllers wil chime  in on how it is done and what is needed. The kit will work, but you could do better. At least it is a brushless system. You don't want a brushed motor on a boat where gasoline or propane accessories are used.

You will also want a reduction gear of some sort, most likely. You wil need to fabricate a motor mount. You might want a different prop. You will need to build a battery enclosure of some sort, somewhere. You will want a mains charger for when you have shore power available. You will want a 48v inverter and a 48/12v DCDC converter for 12v house loads.


As for the bank, that will be perfectly adequate for just docking and stuff. For motoring at any reasonable speed for more than a couple of hours or in adverse conditions, it won't do, without starting up your generator. 1200w of solar is a lot of solar panel. If you do the math you will probably find that you would have to half cover your boat in solar panels and get rid of the mast and sails to use it properly. If you figure on about half that, you can possibly mount them all over the cockpit and off the pushpit rail and get some use out of them. Wind generators are not commonly used on e-boats for a lot of reasons. The short story is they just don't work well for charging a large bank. A 5k generator is more than enough. Hope you mean diesel. But if not, consider the portable (as in "carrying handle" portable) gasoline generators by Ryobi or Honda in the 2kw range. My ryobi weighs about what a typical toolbox weighs and has bluetooth capability. Unfortunately this all means converting to 48v+dc with a mains charger, and certainly a true DC generator at 48v would be more efficient.

The capacitors are interesting but I see that the bigger one has a storage capacity of 3wh x 18 cells = 48wh. A 6v golf cart battery has a storage capacity of 1320wh. The cap weighs 13.5kg and I don't know how many pounds that is but I imagine a bit under 30lbs. The golf cart battery is about 70 lbs. So wow, not bery good energy density. I suspect it has a higher self discharge rate than lead acid batteries, too. It will be interesting to play with, yeah, but don't get your hopes up on capacitors being a practical energy storage system for an e-boat propulsion system at the current state of development.

My personal recommendation is to install your batteries first. If you don't go through with the repower, you can always use them for house loads. For initial installation and testing you can probalby use your existing prop, so no need to haul out. You will want to cut a plate or pan that fits on the existing engine mount stringers and preferably use the original bolt holes, and maybe add a coupling and stub shaft to reach your reduction gear.The same vendor sells an enclosed iron gearbox that will work. They are only available in whole number ratios. Try a 2:1 with the existing prop, consider the 3:1 if you will be putting on a bigger prop. The reduction gear takes all the axial force so it must be mounted securely and be easily aligned with the prop shaft. The motor simply bolts to the reduction gearbox. There are also belt drive systems available or you can build your own. Just remember that the motor cannot accept any axial load. It will self destruct magnificently. A heat sink is highly recommended for the controller. Keep the phase cables as short as possible. Don't connect the negative side of the battery to ground. Always work with the one hand rule. 48vdc is considered non lethal but I would not like to put it to the fine test under ideal conditions. Or any conditions, actually. You should consider it to be lethal. And be very careful not to drop metal tools or partss on terminals. You can weld a wrench in seconds, trust me. I have a melted quarter somewhere that shorted out my phase terminals. It warnt purty. Big bang, some smoke, etc. Even a 110ah 48v bank is a lot of energy and can do pretty freaky things, mostly bad ones, if you are careless.

No, not nuts. Electric can be very practical, and fun. And even cheap. But do your homework first. There are a lot of old threads in this forum with a lot of info. And don''t let your enthusiasm cause you to charge into something without thinking it through.
