[Electric Boats] RE: running the motor on genset

 

I would think you would want some battery in the system to act as a buffer to changes in load.  Even a moderate battery has a large capacitance, on the order of 1 farad. 

Of course it does depend on the type/size of generator and it's ability to respond to changes in load. 

While my system is not up and running yet, and moderate in size, 5 kw motor 48V 100 Ah & 2000# boat, I have decided on a small genset based on an alternator.  Control of the alternator output and efficiency were the deciding factor. Like others the genset is only run when extended run time needed.
