The trolling motor I am considering is a Minn Kota Maxxum 101/Us. 

Those things are pretty pricey new. My WAG is that a higher dollar unit like that would probably have PWM rather than a discrete number of wires.

What do you think? Likely PWM or not.

And if it IS discrete wires and I cannot find a wiring diagram....would it be that hard to figure out on my own?

Thanks again for the input.

PS. The thing is only $50. Should probably just get it "just in case".

You'll need to find out more about the controller's situation. It may have separate wires out to individual coils. Then you'll need a schematic or wiring diagram to rewire the motor to be fully on. I did that with a 55lb motor.
Maybe it's a PWM controller, and there are only two wires out. In that case, you can do what you propose, or you could find a replacement PWM controller.
