Re: [Electric Boats] Re: PWM VS MPPT

I would definitely recommend the additional expense of the MPPT controller. I have been very pleased with my my Outback Flexmax 80s. At peak I'm controlling over 100 amps at 48V and the MPPT charge controllers really matches up with the motor to deliver the maximum power from the solar array. You actually do get like 30% more power from this technology, especially when you're under way and loading the solar array with the electric drive motor. ( or the water heater, air conditioner, toaster oven, microwave, etc)

I have an approximately 10kW peak, 48V D&D motor and can deliver about 80 amps to it from my solar array alone for most of the day. The boat makes just at 4 mph in still water with 80 amps and a steady 3 kts at around 65 amps, which is usually about where I run it  so I can keep the batteries topped off by the end of the day. Considering the Arc only goes about 5 mph with diesel I figure the slower speed is a fair trade for no fuel costs. Plus I'm seldom in a hurry any way.

We can run at 5 kts for about an hour before our 16, 6V GC2 batteries reach 50% DoD. With a few more tweaks I have planned for the future I'm pretty sure I can match the diesel performance with the solar electric whenever the sun is shining. Not so much at night though, lol.

Here you go. Use MPPT. Input custom panels in the tabs if you wish in the spreadsheet in thiis blog. It'll calculate it all for you.
