Re: [Electric Boats] Augmenting diesel with small capacity electric system

Whilst you are repowerig did you check out the ready made Steyr hybrid system?

Hi all. First post.

I had been interested in electric power for our boat until I came to the conclusion that it would have to include a diesel (i.e. be hybrid) to meet our needs. We're a heavy Westsail 32 (19,500#) and will want to go all day with diesel sometimes. Concluded it would need to be 72v and was too expensive. I talked to people at a boat show yesterday tho and interest has been strongly rekindled.

My feeling now is that we can install a Beta 35 (we're repowering anyway) and do a 48v electric drive down into the shaft. I figure that the diesel will give us all the power and range we need but we'll most of the really great advantages of the electric drive. Part of that is that instead of the expensive feathering prop we were thinking of, I can actually use the savings of a conventional 3-blade to "disappear" the prop with a handful of amps from the e-motor. And we'll get a silent "Lance Armstrong effect" from adding a little electric power while sailing. The TPPL battery bank is expensive but it's really just like buying a bunch of cheap fuel in advance and doubles as a huge house bank that can be charged extremely fast and efficiently with the electric motor, along with it's other advantages. Also, I'm guessing that the fuel savings over time in charging would also largely offset the costs of electric system. Being "underpowered" with the 48v system won't be an issue because we'll have the diesel. In calm waters we'll still do maybe 5 kt for a short time (4 would be fine) on electric only, so a minimal capacity system would be fine.

 Thoughts on this configuration?
