Okay, this is confusing me a bit (admittedly, not difficult to do). We're redoing an old Cal 29 hull as a solar cruiser, using a 5KW motor and the original driveshaft, etc. The intention is to build a wheelhouse to be covered with 1000W of solar cells, probably at 48V. Drawing on the experiences of a few folks who have done similar, during sunny days the panels should provide enough power for travel at prudent and relaxed speeds without tapping the battery bank. My question is: if the intention is that a good portion of the use of the vessel will be in those circumstances, running essentially directly off the panels, how would the choice of a charge controller affect the performance?
