For whatever electro-chemical effect is the cause, temperature is a factor in battery performance. It would be interesting to see what the temperature is along the stack by monitoring each (pos & neg) of the battery terminals plus mid case temps. You probably would want to measure each battery voltage as well to put into the analysis.
