[Electric Boats] Re: Beneteau First 26 electric conversion

As for mounting:

If you look where your old ICE engine was mounted, you will probably see a pair of short stringers with holes for the old motor mounts. One common way to mount electric drives is to bolt two pieces of angle iron about 24" long, 3" on a side and 1/4" thick, with 7/16" bolts to these stringers, running fore and aft. You can bridge them with steel plate or bar stock, if you like. These angle iron pieces are the foundation for whatever you want to mount. Just drill and bolt. Space the big angle iron pieces so that the unit will just fit between the upright sides. A small range of adjustment is possible by adding washers onto the mounting bolts and under the angle iron. Some kits are made to bolt onto original common motor mounts such as for the Atomic 4. I used the angle iron method, with a motor mounting plate backed up by 1-1/2" angle iron and pinned to the big angle irons with 3/8" bolts so that the plate pivots fore and aft. The plate also can slide up and down a bit with the bolts to the small edge angle irons loosened. Anyway, to this plate is bolted my cast iron gearbox, and the motor is bolted directly to that. The gearbox is also my thrust bearing, so the motor mount plate is the thrust plate. Crude but effective. No prefab kit for me. My controller rests on the forward end of the big angle irons. Batteries are a foot forward of that, in the aft end of the salon.

If you have already removed the dead diesel, hoses, wiring, etc and cleaned the engine room up nice, take some pics and send them to Thunderstruck and see what they recommend. Also, you could build a mockup of the thunderstruck reduction unit and just see exactly how it will fit in the space and couple to your shaft. I believe the Thunderstruck kit mounts the motor above the shaft and joins them via belt and pulley, with a thrust bearing at the forward end. Tell them what engine you had originally mounted.

Anyway, you will see what you got to do when you get the kit. Don't worry... it will fit. Somehow...

Remember, a universal joint or flex coupling is no substitute for good shaft alignment.
