Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Augmenting diesel with small capacity electric system

Will do.  I am still a few months out on my build.  Hull mostly all done, wheelhouse about 50%, 90% of the drive system is gathered, built, tested, ready for install when I get it on the trailer.  it is coming along.

Sorry, Thought it might look like I was selling over the forum.  But here is the page:  http://www.zebpower.com/en/productInfo/fc9181e84018afa501401fb753360119.htm

It seems to be a reputable company, and not a re-badger or reseller.  I'll report/review it when the "sample" arrives.

Just in case anybody is interested, I was just quoted a price of $1596/unit for new 3.3 Kw DC gensets.  These are 48 VDC, e-start, Subaru forced air-cooled diesel engines.  Each unit has a cabinet, wheels & handle.  Not sure what shipping and duties will be yet. I plan to get one to try out on my boat.

You may have stopped by one of the several booths at the Pacific Sailing and Power Boat Show this last week.  The matching of a hybrid electric to a diesel absolutely requires serious engineering as you must match known engineering rpm, power, and speeds of the diesel and program the electric to support the diesel without placing a negative power draw on it while allowing the electric to push the boat with some cruising range.

I know the Beta platform in the past has had a factory parallel hybrid option.  That is the absolute best solution.  Electric Yacht makes a 48v cruising bolt on, after the transmission, option.  I understand that Esco has a hybrid system that is mounted prior to the transmission but know nothing about them or if they are appropriate for a 35hp Beta.

I ran a parallel hybrid system for several years and Electric Yacht has at least one parrallel hybrid Westsail 32 conversion.  If it were my boat and I were spending the time and money on a Beta, diesel I would focus on the beta hybrid as the best way to go.  You will be able to push the boat at modest 4+kts with a 6 to 8kW motor  unit and I would think it would be best a 48v.  Little regeneration because of the hull displacement, speed and the propeller protected by the full keel.  The ability to improve speed, sail management, and course management would make you the envy of the Westsail fleet.
