RE: [Electric Boats] New member

Welcome, John---good to have NEDRA folks join the list. J

Good observation on the state of the ElectricBoating Yahoo group.

I started that group cca 2003 when I didn't know about the Electric Boats group.

Later, about 2006(?), Paul Preuss who started this group, left & handed this group over to me also.

This group has always had at least 5x the membership of the other group and is always busier, so it's good you landed here.

Since I've been here (14 yrs now), there hasn't been much discussion about electric boat drag racing and probably zero discussion in at least 10 years.  John Paramore from up here in the Pacific NW used to talk about it and used to organize All-Electric boat drag racing events---I attended one wa-a-ay back in the day.  I'm certain that e-boat speed-freaks are still doing this, but they've got their own clique out there I guess.  A few years ago I recall mention of a mini-hydro EV racer that was doing some 100+mph on Lake Washington in Seattle (there's videos online).  The boat was slick as all getout…I think I saw it at a boat show one year also.  I would imagine there's been some competition since then.  Back in early 2000's when I went and watched an all EV drag boat race, they were all using lead-acid, their rear ends were heavy and couldn't carry much energy, so the EV hydro races didn't start with a flying start…they just sat there, then went.  I know that Dave Cloud raced back then…and back then they were pretty much all using stout, modified OMC lower units driven by ADC or other series-wound motors and extremely simple switching…scary as heck.  That 100mph hydro racer I mentioned used all lithium and didn't have anything shlocky about it.

John Paramore wrote this good intro 3 years ago (the white hydroplane is the one I mention above that is really fast and slick):

There's also this:

Your best bet would be to connect with the electric boat racers who've done it all now for going on 20 years.  BTW, John P. may still subscribe here and might have more to add…

Good luck J-

Subject: [Electric Boats] New member

Hello gentlemen

I was following electricboating group but it was dead so I am trying over here.

I am a new member to the group.  I am thinking about an electric drag boat.

I have my own motor and transmission and controller and battery.

I am looking for help on converting an old ICE powered hull into this electric powered boat.

I would like help on issues related to center of gravity, prop speed, propellor horsepower versus rpm.

My target is 8000rpm peak.

About 1200ftlbs torque flat from zero to 8000

I am using a Lenco two speed transmission with 32 spline output shaft.

Goal would be fitting this to an existing v drive?

I do not know all the boat nomenclature.

What would be a good question to pursue here if the goal is to not flip the boat over my first time on the water.
