Thanks, Mike, others, for the input on the hybrid system. Apologies for disappearing but I was traveling.
I would like to figure this out if I can and see if it's economically feasible. I wrote to the main Beta US people and was told that they discontinued their hybrid system because it doubled the cost of the installation and when there was a problem with it, the support was inadequate. (I assume he meant from someone that they partnered with.) So, while I balk a bit at the complication of integrating the electric with the conventional diesel setup, I'm going to pursue it further.
One issue that comes up immediately is the choice of engine and transmission. My understanding is that the electric drive likes to have a prop with a lot of bite because it can deliver lots of torque at low rpm. That seems to suggest it's better to have a higher reduction gearbox on the diesel and a slow turning prop. The Beta 35 and 38 are the same engine but for the 35 being set up with a bigger cam on the injection pump and delivering more power & torque at lower rpm. They then limit the rpm to 2800, I guess to avoid overpowering. The Beta 38 runs up to 3600 rpm and has an oil cooler added. I'm thinking the optimum prop for the 38 is either spun up faster with less pitch, or geared down more. Perhaps it's splitting hairs and it's all handled by the transmission, but I have a hunch it's a little better to go with the slower turning engine with the torque moved down to a lower rpm? Anyone have thoughts there?
