Re: [Electric Boats] 36 foot cutter rig steel sailboat converted to electric drive

Daniel. I am curious as to weather you ever try regen under sail.
I looked at the torgueedo batteries but was told bu the rep thst you could only charge them from the chargers they supply.

Hello,
I have a 36 foot steel hull cutter rig sailboat that I have converted to electric drive. I replaced the broken Perkins 4108 with an electric propulsion kit from Electric Yacht. the kit came with 2 motors and controllers mounted on a frame that belt drives the prop shaft. It puts out 20 KW of electric power. I went with a Lithium propulsion battery bank that consists of Torqeedo batteries arranged in a series parallel to make 48 volts with 208 amp hours. I converted the boat in Quebec and motor/sailed all the way to Florida via the ICW then to the Bahamas and back to Florida.
To charge and extend the range I have a 5.5Kw diesel generator that will give me 50A DC through the chargers for the Torqeedo batteries. She is not fast but what sailboat is. I can go for just under 1 hr at full throttle(300A draw) and the boat moves at hull speed (6.9 Knts) then the batteries are depleted and I am limited to what the chargers can give (50A). Motoring in the ICW I was averaging 4.5 knts with the generator on and a charged battery bank in the morning starting out I could easily maintain that speed all day 8 to 10 hrs moving. If I planned on a stop at a marina for the night I would shut the generator off a couple hours away from the marina and use the batteries. Shore power recharging at 120v takes about 8 hours if the bank is down all the way it is half that time with the generator since it is putting out 240volts to the chargers. Usually most nights I would anchor and just cook diner with the electric stove while charging back up and within a couple hours of generator charging the bank was back around 90% full.
It has been a great learning experience converting the boat and traveling long distances with her.
Electric boats can go everywhere!
