Zero downside, multiple upsides.
48V is still fairly low voltage, not too efficient, but not too bad either.

Personally, I think 48V for 20kW is "not too efficient", but the reality will be mostly/ max 5% of peak use, where thick cables make the whole thing work well.
So I think the idea is pretty close to mini-max.

48V is "safe", and this is a big upside.
Most welding/plasma stuff is 30-40V, +/-.
The  EU low voltage directive is 80V DC max.

If you have the money, use the thick cables you mentioned.
Boats don´t make money - they annihilate it.
