Copper bars are good. We see them with the NorthStar Batteries we sell. Those are TPPL carbon batteries in a slim case. The + and - terminals are next to each other and you can connect them very nicely. Be sure to put a little spacer between the batteries (if they are touching each other, it is almost impossible to remove them. Not sure if you can always get the traditional boxed battery to do that.
The 8 times 6v batteries is an elegant way to build out the 48v pack. Sounds like flooded batteries. With the boat being in warm weather, you may want to also install a watering system for the batteries.
I would also like to hear what people are doing about balancing their battery packs. Who is using an equalized to keep each individual battery equal in the string? What are your experiences?
