Well, you actually only need to steer with the outboard for extreme maneuvering such as when docking. A straight course and reasonable turns can be made with the boat's rudder. Thruttle can be adjusted with a piece of PVC pipe, split and hoseclamped onto the end of the tiller. You can also buy outboard tiller extensions. For shifting between F/N/R you just gotta lean down there and get it, unless you use a powerboat outboard engine cable control setup, which can also be used for throttle and outboard steering control.
I kept an outboard as a backup for about a year while I got used to the dependability of electric drive. I ended up never using it, just startting the outboard once a week to keep the carb from getting gummed up. I eventually sold it to get the gasoline off the boat once and for all. So I thought. Now I keep a portable gasoline "get home" generator onboard as a range extender until I get my solar up.
