Re: [Electric Boats] Re: 48V ELECTRIC OUTBOARD

I personally have a German made Torqeedo 1003, which I use on my dingy. It is also a 1000 watt outboard, it has ran great for the 5 years I have owned it.   But I'll be honest if this had been out when I bought my Torqeedo I might have gotten it instead.  My 1003 came with a battery so it is not an apples to apples comparison.  The Hangkai with shipping would be about 400 dollars, let's add another 400 bucks to buy a similar lithium battery. So the Hangkai is around $800 total compared to the $2000 I spent on my Torqeedo, Apples to Apples..

Now  my Torqeedo is very light and easy to remove from the dingy, and has a cool USB app that I can pair with my phone. They also have a pretty good repair hotline that I have used once when I broke the standup pin.  But is all that really worth over twice the price?  Not sure.   I would love to see a heads up race and range comparison between this outboard and my Torqeedo 1003.

On an interesting note: The Germans also made a comparable, comparison to Gas outboards, the Torqeedo 1003 is stated in the West Marine ad above to be equivalent to a 3 hp gas outboard.  So the Germans are a little more conservative then the Chinese in the comparison to gas, but both assume their 1 hp electric will perform quit well with much larger gas outboards.  And both are probable right. Electric motors rate HP on continuous HP not peak like gas motors do, not to mention the huge difference in torq curves.  So no electric HP is not easily compared to gas HP because of the vastly different methodologies used to calculate what is HP.  For short periods electric motors can deliver many times there rated HP, but will only deliver there rated continuous HP over longer ranges, when they reach thermal equilibrium.

To the guy that bough the Hangkai, keep us in the loop if you have any problems with it, if it is half as reliable as my Torqeedo, I might buy one just to have a spare dingy motor.

48 volts.  Check.  21 Amps.  Check.  That makes 1000 Watts INPUT to the motor max.  So, they must have discovered how to make a motor that is 100% efficient since they claim 1000W Output.  Then they take 1000W and divide it by 746 Watts per Horsepower and get 4 HP.  There must be something wrong with my calculator.  I get 1.34 HP.  I am not quite ready to trade in my German 4 KW motor that I've used for almost 9 seasons now.

Sounds interesting. Please keep us informed on how they stand up over time. St that price point one can afford two backups and still be cheaper than the German ones

48v ELECTRIC OUTBOARD

I got the battery from Ebay.com (US). The seller is Vpower. Carbon fiber box with on/off switch, plugs for DC in and DC out.  It come with the charger and bag ( not waterproof!). This is a battery pack for electric bike.

The outboard is from AliExpress, Brand HANGKAI, electric 48v models. The seller was "perfect power machine" Good English, good communication. You will find others.

The outboard DC plug is the same than the battery pack output… so no need to change anything.. Install, plug and go!!  Care the throttle arm rotates 360d, So, it fell it in the water…still working!

The outboard rotate 180d for reverse. For the catamarans, a switch on the electric poles should give reverse/steering if controller can….. good fun

Fred, what are the models of the outboard and battery you purchased? Is the battery for an electric bicycle/scooter, or aimed at the marine market? Sounds very interesting. Enjoy!
