Chris it's to minimize swelling of the cells under excessive heat causing the inner plates to distort and short. There is always some swelling that occurs but minimal within tolerances. In my case it's also to keep the pack I place using the tie straps. In most cases (cars) the compression is done in a battery box lined with a foam pad to compress and keep the batteries in place in case of a car flipping or impact. In the case of a boat I didn't see this as practical so went with the tie straps and tie down straps. If the Cat flips I have more "pressing" problems than the pack even though it should stay in place. 8O)
Not my battery pack. 80)

Steve,
I see where you talk about "compressing" the cells. I've heard this elsewhere as well. What is the reason for this and how important is it.
Thanks,
Chris
