I think that your plan sounds reasonable. My first project is a small boat also, 12' Lasar sailboat hull. My first thought was to get a pair of nice oars as backup. I like to row.
I've read in dozens of sources that generally lead acid (LA) batteries should not be discharged more that 50% if you want them to last. And that's for deep cycle LA batteries. And don't let them sit discharged for long..
So, my question is, are you including a battery capacity meter (BCM)?
