Many outboards have or can be fitted with remote throttle/steering. You will want to get a setup like that.

I am planning to install an inboard electric motor and LiFeP04 battery system on my sailboat, but I am considering putting a gas outboard on the existing transom mount as a backup. My original question, restated is this: If you have a transom mounted outboard, how do you steer it or control the throttle? It's a newbie question because I'm a newbie to sailboats.
