Re: [Electric Boats] Simple First

Capt. Len,

I like your philosophy of using a switch to control which battery is connected.  I really like the idea of only running on one battery till it runs down, then swap over to the other battery.  If both batteries start off good, then you should be able to count on getting home on your fully charged battery, right??

The problem with batteries is that they discharge faster when you have a high load on them.
If you tie the batteries in parallel to reduce the amount of current you're pulling out of each one, you'll get a more than 2x improvement.  (your mileage will vary).

If you don't have an electrical background, and haven't read a lot about using electric motors - this might not make a lot of sense.  But keep reading!  And look for discussions about "Peukert Effect".   On normal flooded lead acid batteries (standard car batteries) - it's a BIG deal.  AGM batteries not as much, and supposedly on lithium batteries - hardly noticeable.   Unfortunately, I haven't ever worked with lithium batteries, so I can't say from personal experience, and I certainly can't say if the advantage of lithium batteries is enough to make up for the price difference.

I have a 10.5 ft FG catamaran I have a 40 lb thrust trollingbrand new sitting here, I am thinking 2 batteries to a switch, #1-#2 -Both and off. Go out on one and as it dies, turn around and head back on #2. Figure going to both will give a final push.  I was thinking of adding a 100W solar kit like from Harbor freight.

I don't know. Sailing I could tell you. building FG too but Electric power am a complete novice.

Looking at a pair of 12V. from walmart online

I also have a 9.8 HP outboard but with all the sun in Central Fl. Solar electric is appealing

Detailed input for why no good or for an alternative
