[Electric Boats] Re: BP oil spill, one year later... why are we into electric boats?

Thanks for the great insight. I totally agree, and I think I've heard the same thing from people that your brother in law said. People always want the best and don't want to compromise, which is understandable. But as you said, even cars are a compromise, an SUV doesn't make a good single person commuter car, nor can you tow a boat with a small compact car. The auto/ ICE industry it seems has a lot more control over their message and has us indoctrinated.

When saying that EP systems are great, we have to emphasize in bold, all caps- **for certain applications** Of course the scope of those applications will increase as the battery technology (the weak link) improves, but for now, I think it's safe to say that eco tour boats operating in a lake or river, bay cruisers who want a peaceful, short distance outing, and auxiliary sailboats that do day sailing and coastal cruising (or further, more on that in another post), for these users, there is a clear choice that is better- EP... Then its a matter of convincing the public and the EP industry needs to work on their message, like the EV car people are starting to do.

Some people are really motivated by "eco" reasons, however I'm pretty sure the argument that will win the day is if EP is shown (and if the buying public can be convinced) that the technical and practical advantages make the most sense. Are we safely at the point where we can all say, that for certain applications, maybe power boats in sheltered and pristine areas and for auxiliary power on day and coastal cruising sailboats- that EP is hands down, the best choice, technically and practically? If so, then it looks like a marketing and PR challenge to increase sales for these systems and change the boating world.
